A malfunctioning fuel pump — particularly one that is operating on an inconsistent basis (and sometimes, not at all) — can cause engine vibration. The general characteristic is that it fluctuates fuel pressure and this in turn affects the performance of a vehicle. And yet, research has revealed that just a 10% reduction in fuel pressure will induce an engine vibration, which ultimately does harm to smooth-running.
The principal function of a fuel pump is to convey the right amount and fuel flow rate to the powerplant. When it does not, the engine may stall or start to idle roughly, which can cause shaking. According to the Automotive Service Association, roughly one-in-four engine vibration complaints are fuel system-related and many are traced back to a failing fuel pump.
In the cases of total fuel pump failure, from a blockage to inernal wear, vibrations will become pronounced. For example, if a fuel pump’s life cycle is 100,000 miles and it begins to fail at 80,000 miles vehicles oscillate–a symptom that could indicate other mechanical problems to the unsuspecting driver. Jon Davis, a car expert: Your engine is clearly running smoothly if your fuel system is in good health.
Long-term, the vibrations can also become pronounced under heavy throttle. Under high-demand conditions, a failing fuel pump may not deliver enough volume to feed the engine and cause it to stumble or vibrate. There have been a few studies noted by the Society of Automotive Engineers showing that vehicles with fuel delivery-related problems had 40% more cases wherein vibrations occurred during hard acceleration.
Vibrations may be present with Fuel Pump noise as well. A struggling pump might start making weird noises like whining or rattling, sounds that also match up with the engine vibrations. Observing these symptoms can also help perform a timely check-up of your fuel system and prevent any further damage to your vehicle.
Essentially, engine vibration can have a noticeable affect on how your vehicle performs. Prevent these and increase the driving enjoyment, among other things by maintaining the fuel system regularly.
