Thanks to Paramount Pictures I was lucky enough to attend the Sydney Red Carpet Premiere of the excellent ‘PUSS IN BOOTS.’ I got the chance to interview Jeffrey Katzenberg – I was able to get quite a bit of time with him; we talked about 3D, Puss In Boots itself, Guillermo Del Toro and I was even able to get his advice for young filmmakers: Check it out:

Q: Congratulations on the movie, and for the studio as well!

A: Thank you!

Q: I was wondering if you could tell us a little bit about the developments with 3D technology; I remember you once spoke about glassless 3D?

A: Well we continue to invest heavily in it. One of the things that we are really proud of is that – so far pretty much around the world – that the 3D of ‘Puss In Boots’ has been recognized as being outstanding if not amongst the best of anywhere to date. And that is a combination of us continuing to invest in new tools, and our filmmakers; who are becoming more and more invested in it.

We’ve made more 3D movies at Dreamworks then any other studio in the world; and that knowledge is being passed from movie to movie to movie. So we are actually getting better and better at this, so already today we’ve seen some work from ‘Madagascar’ that’s coming next year – the 3D work in that is just spectacular. So it’s a combination of innovating the tools, and the artists getting more and more… and you know, them getting more and more comfortable with using it effectively.

Q: I also wanted to know about Guillermo Del Toro’s involvement in Dreamworks and how that started, and what’s happening now?

A: He and I met each other a couple of years ago, and I have to say it was love at first sight. He’s a genius; this crazy mexican.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about what he is working on?

A: Everything! ‘Guardians’ is the next big movie that he’s actually executive producing for us, and its an amazing, amazing film. He’s doing amazing work on it! He’s shooting his own movie right now up in Canada, and every couple of weekends our team skypes back and forth with him and he’s giving notes and stuff. The good thing is he’s a great multi-tasker! We’re lucky to have him.

Q: And just finally before you go, do you have any advice for the aspiring filmmakers out there?

A: Go into animation! It’s never been a better time. Animated movies are just fantastic. Last year five of the ten biggest movies worldwide were CG animated movies, so it’s no longer a niche, it’s no longer a ghetto, it’s no longer cartoons for children. These are mainstream movies; so it’s a great field to be in!

Q: Thanks Jeffrey, thanks so much! Good luck with the film!

A: Thank you!

‘PUSS IN BOOTS’ Is out across Australia today; and we highly recommend you go and see it! I will try to get my review up this week, but let me assure you it is EXCELLENT. One of the best films Dreamworks Animation has yet produced!
